Stock up on winter supplies

Putting a “winter supply” box in your car is great in the event of a break down. Keep a box full of supplies like a flashlight, road flares, first-aid kit, a few blankets, a set of warm clothes for the driver, extra gloves, a radio, a phone charger, bag of sand, an extra ice scraper and snacks.

Check your engine coolant and antifreeze levels

It’s important to have these levels properly monitored in the winter to ensure that your vehicle doesn’t freeze up when left to sit in freezing temperatures. This can make a big difference when you’re in a rush in the morning and your vehicle won’t start.

Check your tire pressure and treads

Having your tires properly inflated, and not worn is integral to keeping control of your vehicle when the roads are icy. You can easily check your tire pressure on your own using a tire gauge, and fill them up at just about any gas station. You can also check your tire’s treads using the “Lincoln Test” – just insert a penny in your tire’s treads, head inward. If you still see all of Lincoln’s head, it’s time to start thinking about replacing your tires.

Once winter rolls in, you might also want to consider switching to winter tires.

Use winter windshield wiper fluid

While regular windshield wiper fluid freezes quickly in the winter, rendering it sometimes worse than useless, winter windshield wiper fluid is designed to loosen ice and snow from your windshield, and won’t freeze itself.
